Their job? Neutralize free radicals\u2014those unstable, highly reactive little compounds that come from normal body processes, plus outside forces like pollution, smoking, stress, and UV exposure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Left unchecked, free radicals accelerate cellular aging, damage DNA, and pave the way for heart disease, cancer, and neurodegenerative disorders. Antioxidants stop them cold, keeping your body\u2019s cells youthful, functional, and firing on all cylinders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAn antioxidant fights the oxidative stress caused by daily cellular activity,\u201d explains Laura Tajan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think of them as internal armor against aging, inflammation, and long-term wear and tear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>So what foods actually deliver the goods? Here\u2019s your cheat sheet.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Red Bell Peppers<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong> Bright, crunchy, and loaded with vitamin C and carotenoids. Basically the superhero of the vegetable drawer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Tomatoes<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong> Packed with lycopene, a powerful antioxidant linked to reduced cancer risk\u2014especially prostate. Toss them into salads, sauces, or slice them straight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Carrots<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong> Beta-carotene-rich and a top-tier skin ally. Carrots support vision, immunity, and help fight the signs of aging from the inside out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Green Tea<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong> A staple for a reason. Polyphenols and catechins in green tea neutralize free radicals like a detox command center. Just go easy on the sugar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. Spinach<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong> A leafy green MVP rich in vitamins A and C, plus flavonoids that protect against cellular damage. Walnuts<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong> A triple threat: vitamin E, omega-3s, and anti-inflammatory properties. Great on yogurt, in salads, or by the handful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>8. Dark Chocolate (yes, really)<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong> The higher the cocoa content, the richer in flavonoids. But moderation matters\u2014don\u2019t mistake it for a free pass to inhale chocolate bars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn typical portions, its antioxidant effect is modest but real,\u201d says Tajan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What happens if you\u2019re low on antioxidants?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no exact blood test for &#8220;antioxidant levels,&#8221; but here\u2019s the rule of thumb: if your diet\u2019s low in fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, and omega-3s\u2014and you smoke, drink, or live in a city\u2014you\u2019re probably running a deficit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And here\u2019s the kicker: when your body\u2019s under stress, it <em>burns through<\/em> antioxidants faster. So the more chaotic your life, the more nutritional reinforcements you need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Can you just pop antioxidant supplements and call it a day?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not so fast. Over-supplementing can backfire\u2014big time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToo much vitamin A can lead to liver damage. Excess vitamin E may mess with medications. And mega-dosing vitamin C could cause kidney stones,\u201d warns Tajan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unless you\u2019re treating a diagnosed deficiency, it\u2019s better to get your antioxidants the natural way: from whole foods. Your body knows what to do with the real stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>And what about omega-3s\u2014do they count?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019re not technically antioxidants, but omega-3s (found in fish, flaxseed, and chia) are powerful anti-inflammatories that support antioxidant function.
