My friend recently recounted to me her planned Tompkins Square Park meet-up with an ex, a couple months post-(amicable)-breakup. Among the several bits of gossip and personal developments they\u2019d caught up on, she was most caught off-guard by the glint of her ex\u2019s new accessory: a tight silver hoop. Apparently, he\u2019d longed for one for some time, but hesitated because a saucy piece of metal\u00a0on his ear\u00a0would go against the sartorial status quo of his stuffy finance job. But then he plucked the hoop off to show my friend that it wasn\u2019t a\u00a0real<\/em>\u00a0piercing, but a clip-on. His work didn\u2019t suddenly become amenable to body modification\u2014he just wanted\u00a0the look<\/em>, so he sought a less permanent avenue. But that desire for a little hoop extends well beyond downtown-y finance guys with clip-ons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though the accessory is certainly not new\u2014shoutout to Michael Jordan\u2014hooped men have recently gone mainstream in Hollywood. (For what it\u2019s worth, I\u2019d estimate there are about a dozen hoops affixed to the lobes of our most stylish\u00a0GQ<\/em>\u00a0staffers right now.) And, from what I have gathered, the thirst for a guy donning such a piece of ear candy is just as widespread. Even if it\u2019s ultimately just an earring (a pierced ear is a rite of passage many women endure before they can even speak), a man in a tasteful little hoop exerts a visceral, immediate pull. When I recently polled some peers about the phenomenon, nearly everyone I spoke to had some theory about what it signaled. Some warned that the accessory underscored a man\u2019s rakishness (\u201cart h0\u201d\u00a0was the exact phrase someone used) while others argued it communicated\u00a0coquettish confidence. Mostly, though, the consensus I gleaned was that the hoop carried a faint but unmistakable \u201cbisexual energy,\u201d which only heightened the intrigue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last month, Chanel announced Jacob Elordi\u00a0as the new face<\/a>\u00a0of Bleu de Chanel with a moody portrait that showcased the slim flirty hoop latched onto the Australian actor\u2019s lobe. Like his dreamy\u00a0Saltburn<\/em>\u00a0character Felix, who sports piercings\u00a0on his ear and eyebrow, Elordi\u2019s earring is a little wink that injects some potent swagger into his public image. (The accessory also adds some latent credibility to his prestige-acting chops\u2014in\u00a0his 2023\u00a0GQ<\/em>\u00a0cover story, Elordi said that he pierced his ears because Daniel Day-Lewis did.) There was a similar fervor around Paul Mescal\u2019s snug hoop in last year\u2019s\u00a0Hamnet<\/em>, in which the actor portrays (reportedly bi) William Shakespeare\u2014who, according to costume designer Malgosia Turzanska,\u00a0was believed to don a hoop\u00a0in his day. Reporting about the\u00a0Hamnet<\/em>\u00a0hoop in January,\u00a0The Guardian<\/em><\/a>\u00a0cited one fan who was \u201cbegging my boyfriend to get a tiny hoop earring\u201d after seeing the film. (Mescal incited a similar accessory-based thirst with his breakout role in\u00a0Normal People<\/em>, which had fans clamoring\u00a0for their own version\u00a0of his character Connell\u2019s thin silver chain.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s no coincidence that, amidst the little hoop\u2019s rise, several massive jewelry brands have recently recruited famous men as ambassadors. In 2024, New York\u2019s own David Yurman recruited eventual Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan to be the face of The Vault, the brand\u2019s first-ever high jewelry collection for men. Jordan himself is a long-time fan of otic ornaments, wearing diamond studs, simple hoops, and flashy stacks in equal measure. He rocked a pair of icy cable huggers in his\u00a0GQ<\/em>\u00a0cover\u00a0last March. Meanwhile,\u00a0Heated Rivalry<\/em>\u2019s\u00a0Connor Storrie, in his months-long foray into extreme fame, penned a deal with the American jewelry giant, Tiffany & Co.; at the Met Gala earlier this year, he punctuated his Saint Laurent ensemble with a pair of diamond-encrusted huggers from the brand. His co-star Hudson Williams, too, struck a partnership with Italian label Bvlgari, and dotted his ear with two chunky silver hoops at the Met. In a\u00a0Variety<\/em><\/a>\u00a0story about the jewelry trend, Williams\u2019s stylist, Anastasia Walker, said that \u201cthere is something kind of bad boy and free about\u201d the little-hoop look. \u201cHoops have this feeling of being more casual [and] cooler.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aside from being a relatively low-cost form of body-mod, the hoop\u2019s broadening appeal among men also feels like an honest departure from the performative-male-coded accessorizing of yore. Painted nails can be removed with acetone; pearl chokers and Chrome Hearts rings can simply be taken off at the end of the night. But rocking a piercing is pretty hardcore. It requires actual bodily commitment (plus a pinch of pain). And something about voluntarily puncturing your ear for a tiny flash of silver or gold\u2014even if your boss might not approve\u2014feels more sincere than the parade of experimental virtue signalers men have cycled through over the last decade.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
