She advises starting with the simplest question: \u201cDo you like it?\u201d \u201cInvesting in a work you do not appreciate at all,\u201d she says, \u201cis a fool\u2019s game.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, condition concerns the state of preservation after centuries of handling\u2014past restorations and cleanings directly affect value.\u201d This blend of heart and intellect makes collecting both a rational and an emotional journey. \u201cMany collectors start with the best they can afford at the time\u2014perhaps works on paper or prints. As their budget grows, they gradually upgrade their collections. True collectors are always refining their holdings; the key is patience in waiting for the right moment to buy and sell.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based in Hong Kong, Georgina observes that Asian collectors\u2014 particularly those from Hong Kong and Mainland China\u2014 approach collecting in a highly scholarly manner. She spends considerable time accompanying clients to view existing collections and annually plans trips to European art centres such as Versailles in France or Genoa in Italy, where they can appreciate the finest masterpieces together, rather than merely discussing transactions. For high-net-worth individuals new to the classic art field, she advises: \u201cStay focused\u2014 you don\u2019t need to know every artist. The more you concentrate on a specific artist, medium, or period\u2014for example, Turner\u2019s watercolours from the 1840s\u2014 the more effectively you can refine your connoisseurship.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the current economic climate, Georgina believes the art market\u2019s challenge lies in persuading quality collectors to sell. Buyers remain eager for top-tier lots, but sellers often hesitate. She advises against rushing to offload recently acquired works during a market downturn; instead, one should patiently hold onto high-quality pieces. The value of long- term ownership in classic art lies not only in its resilience against depreciation but also in the intellectual and emotional fulfilment it brings. \u201cPassionate investors who turn their attention to classic art may be pleasantly surprised\u2014this category is often overlooked amid the hype of contemporary art. To me, acquiring an object that has been treasured for centuries offers a certain reassurance. Yet today\u2019s feverish pursuit of the \u2018new\u2019 actually presents a good entry opportunity for classic art. Don\u2019t investors often say to buy more when the stock is down? Perhaps that also explains why the collectors\u2019 list of classic art is never short of financiers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
