7 Things To Know About Ken Leung

From his Broadway debut to his initial university degree, here's what you need to know about the "Industry" star.

Ken Leung was born and raised in New York City to Chinese parents

Kenneth Leung, born on January 21, 1970, to Chinese parents in New York City, grew up in the Lower East Side of Manhattan and Brooklyn. Despite his New York upbringing, he once noted that people frequently mistook him for a martial artist from Hong Kong after starring in Rush Hour.

Ken Leung’s film debut came in the action-comedy Rush Hour

Leung’s first major film role was as the villainous, bleached-blond henchman, Sang, in the 1998 action-comedy Rush Hour, marking his big-screen debut alongside Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker.

Ken Leung made his Broadway debut playing a Chinese immigrant

In 2002, Leung made his Broadway debut in the Tony-Award winning musical Thoroughly Modern Millie He starred as Ching Ho, a Chinese immigrant working under the nefarious Mrs. Meers at the Hotel Priscilla. The production follows Millie Dillmount’s move to New York City with the goal of marrying for wealth rather than love. His performance is preserved on the original Broadway cast recording.

Ken Leung joined the fourth season of the hit television series, Lost

Leung’s performance  in The Sopranos, impressed the creators of Lost, who later cast him for a role that was tailor-made just for him. A professional spiritualist able to communicate with the dead,  Leung’s Miles Straume was a main character introduced in the fourth season of the ABC series  and featured through its final three seasons.

Ken Leung initially studied physical therapy at New York University

Originally enrolled in a physical therapy program at New York University, he discovered acting during his junior year after taking an introductory elective. This class—which included fellow students Catherine Russell and Anne Jackson—became a turning point, prompting him to pursue performance professionally.

Ken Leung is nothing like his Industry character

He has earned critical acclaim for portraying the ruthless Managing Director Eric Tao in the HBO and BBC Drama Industry. Despite the character’s cutthroat presence in the world of investment banking, Leung maintains that he bears little resemblance to Tao. Off-screen, he often appears stoic and zen, a temperament that contrasts sharply with his on-screen intensity. In preparing for the role, however, Leung explored his character’s familial background, citing the lasting psychological impact of China’s Cultural Revolution on Tao’s parents and upbringing – a historical framework that helps inform the character’s guarded demeanour and conduct at Pierpoint. This role has become the most recognisable of his two-decade career, with HBO even releasing SternTao merchandise inspired by the series.

Ken Leung became an unlikely TikTok favourite thanks to his Industry co-star

While promoting Industry,  Leung unexpectedly gained attention on TikTok through playful behind-the-scenes videos with co-star Myha’la. The actor has admitted that he likely wouldn’t have joined the platform on his own, but Myha’la’s enthusiasm made the experience enjoyable. Their videos — often featuring dancing and light-hearted moments — quickly resonated with fans, with Leung noting that the collaboration works so well because they both love to dance.
