“You can have a big house, you can only stay in one room. You can have a lot of chairs, you can only sit at one spot. You can have a whole table of food, you can only eat that much.”
It is a striking sentiment, especially coming from a man who spends his days navigating the sprawling portfolios of Asia’s ultra-high-net-worth families. But for Shee Tse Koon, the very concept of wealth has undergone a profound evolution. While he is the head of one of Asia’s biggest wealth franchises and the key executive who is leading the bank’s quest to grow retail and wealth AUM to more than SGD 1 trillion by 2030, Shee Tse Koon’s perspective goes beyond the pursuit of numbers. In today’s landscape, the ultimate metric of success isn’t the size of the fortune—it’s the magnitude of its impact.
If you are looking for a traditional banker obsessed solely with basis points and quarterly yields, you have come to the wrong place. Shee is a philosopher of capital, a leader who firmly believes that banking, stripped of its human element, is an empty vessel.
The Real “Soul of Banking”
To understand Shee’s approach to wealth, you have to understand his approach to the world. Having covered vast, diverse markets across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, he isn’t the type to just parachute into a region and look at a spreadsheet. He is a voracious reader of history.
“I read into the history of what transpired in those countries, how they became the countries they were, what their early leaders were talking about… and therefore what they need,” he explains. Once you understand the cultural and historical heartbeat of a place, the banking naturally follows. “The real soul of banking is the very purpose of it. Banking exists to facilitate commerce, to facilitate capital flows so that economies and communities can be developed. I’ve always looked to see how the work I do every day can make a difference to real people.”
This human-centric anchor has perfectly positioned him to guide today’s ultra-wealthy. The paradigm of giving has completely shifted. It is no longer “giving for giving’s sake.” Today’s affluent families are directing their wealth toward intensely personal, purpose-driven themes—whether it’s climate sustainability, healthcare, or setting up family foundations to lift the communities where they first struck gold. Astoundingly, more than 60% of the investments made by DBS wealth clients are currently in themes aligned with ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) indices.

The “Phygital” Equation and the Next-Gen Trailblazers
In an era dominated by artificial intelligence (AI) and algorithmic trading, Shee champions a deeply “phygital” approach. Technology, he argues, is a brilliant channel to increase efficiency, but it must never eclipse the relationship. “We should always leverage technology, but never lose sight that technology is not what it does to human beings, but what it does for and with human beings,” he asserts. Ultimately, wealth management is anchored on trust, and trust requires a human touch.
This empathy is crucial when navigating the greatest wealth transfer in history. While many view the incoming generation of tech-savvy successors as radical disruptors, Shee simply sees the natural progression of history. “The so-called older generation were likewise trailblazers in their days,” he notes. “The next generation is just the next wave of innovation.”
By establishing next-generation wealth planning and transition, and setting up comprehensive family office, Shee’s team bridges the gap. They equip the digitally native generation with insights into legacy planning while helping patriarchs and matriarchs integrate digital asset ecosystems into their portfolios, creating a seamless, cross-generational synergy.
“I’ve always looked to see how the work I do every day can make a difference to real people.”
A Tale of Two Cities
As global wealth dramatically shifts toward Asia, the dynamic between Hong Kong and Singapore is often portrayed as a fierce rivalry. Shee, however, views them as the ultimate complementary force.
Hong Kong serves as the natural nexus to Northeast Asia, boasting incredibly deep, dynamic capital markets. Singapore acts as the gateway to Southeast Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East. Beyond its infrastructure, Shee points out Singapore’s unique “hidden wealth”: its extraordinary multicultural and multi-racial diversity. From the vast array of Chinese dialects (Hokkien, Teochew, Hakka, Cantonese) to Malay, Indian, and vast expat communities, this melting pot creates an unparalleled environment for managing global wealth. “These two wealth hubs complement each other” he says.

The Unconventional Playbook
When it comes to cultivating the next generation of financial talent to manage these complex ecosystems, Shee doesn’t look at technical prowess first.
“I hire for values and attitude, and I train for knowledge and skills,” he states flatly. “Knowledge can be acquired, but values are very much who the person is.” In an industry built on cross-generational trust, integrity and a genuine desire to do right by the customer are nonnegotiable.
And his most unconventional advice for young professionals hungry for success?
“Don’t chase your next promotion. Don’t just focus on your next pay rise,” he advises. In a world obsessed with titles and money, he urges young talent to let success come to them organically as a result of who they are and how they build their careers. “If you start focusing on just those tangible things… you will start missing out on what’s really important to sustain a long-term, meaningful career.”
The Final Ledger
Strip away the global portfolios and market strategies, and Shee Tse Koon’s personal definition of a wealthy life is remarkably grounded.
True wealth isn’t the number in the bank. It is the culmination of your accumulated experiences, your networks, your acquired knowledge, and your core beliefs. It is about taking all of those elements and using them to amplify your impact on the world. “Use that to inspire, to enable even more people,” Shee reflects. “That can amplify the effect today, and that can amplify the effect beyond today. That, to me, is true wealth.”
