Reflecting on his football journey, Matt Orr says, “I started playing football when I was four years old, very young. My father was a professional footballer in New Zealand, and he was passionate about the sport even before I moved to Hong Kong. When I was born, I began playing football mainly influenced by him—that was the starting point of my journey.” Regarding his study abroad experience in the United States, Matt explains, “I attended a sports academy—IMG Academy, which is a very well-known athlete training system around the world. Their sports program is designed to help you balance academics and athletics. Every morning, I would go to the gym for training sessions, then attend school in the afternoon. This kind of schedule kept my days busy and taught me a lot about balance, discipline, and stability. These experiences helped me unlock my potential during university and successfully step into a professional football career.”
Having previously played for Kitchee Sports Club and launched his professional career, Matt Orr is now a member of Shanghai Port Football Club. Reflecting on a milestone, he shares, “In July, I scored my first goal for the club since joining. It was a special moment for me.” Talking about the challenges in his career, he candidly states, “As an athlete, I’ve experienced many tough moments. You have to maintain a balance—not too low, not too high. When facing challenges, you learn how to handle more pressure and become even more committed.”
“As long as you put your heart into it, plan for yourself, and work tirelessly, there’s nothing you cannot achieve.”
Play Longer, Stronger, and Better
The transition from defender to striker is no easy feat. Matt explained: “I think the shift from defensive to offensive mindset is very difficult, because it’s a completely new role. I grew up playing as a defender for many years now, so in some ways this change feels natural. Of course, at the beginning it was tough because I hadn’t practiced attacking on the front line for a long time, and competition for the striker position is always fierce. You need to learn through playing games and adjusting quickly, but that’s never easy.”
Matt has his own perspective on wealth: “I believe that being wealthy is not just about money. Money can give you the freedom to live as you wish, but true happiness comes from doing what you love every day and living your dreams. Being able to pursue your passions and continuously improve— that is the most precious thing.”
Refinding Endurance and Potential
He also added that family, friendship, and companionship are the sources of his happiness. Regarding personal planning, Matt states, “In my free time, I participate in some football-related business activities, explore different industries, and meet new friends. Football is my passion, but I’m also willing to try new things and embrace new challenges. Life is a continuous process of learning and growth. As long as I stay passionate, I believe a brighter future is within reach.”
Throughout his football career, Matt understands the importance of facing life’s highs and lows. He shares, “I once lost a match, but it remains vivid in my memory because of the incredible atmosphere—the fans’ cheers, their voices, colors, and energy were truly special. Participating in that game was an honor; whenever I think of it, I feel proud.” Matt firmly believes that with dreams, anything is possible. He concludes, “Young people should be brave enough to break through their limitations and continuously pursue higher goals. As long as you put your heart into it, plan for yourself, and work tirelessly, there’s nothing you cannot achieve.”
